'The Importance of Being Juvenal' at Galerie Stephanie

-

MANILA, Philippines - As a tribute to artist Juvenal Sanso, Galerie Stephanie mounts an exhibit titled “The Importance of Being Juvenal,” which opens on March 21, 7 p.m., at Galerie Stephanie Unit 1B, Parc Plaza Building, 183 E. Rodriguez Jr. Avenue, Libis, Quezon City.

The title of the show came about because many of Sanso’s collectors as well as the art public have been intrigued by the name Juvenal.

Juvenal has been thought to mean many things. National Artist Nick Joaquin thought it to mean “youth” as it is close to the word juventud (in Spanish) or even juvenile in English. Others have thought it to be synonymous to spring. Whatever it is, this unique name has been important enough to have several French and Italian cities name important places of interest such as a port, a bridge, residences and inns and even a garage call itself Juvenal.

Sanso himself clarifies that Juvenal came from a favorite satiric writer of his father, who was born circa 55 AD. The satiric writer Juvenal was born in what is now Monte Casino south of Rome and is known to have written scathing satirical commentaries about the corruption and the rotten social fabric of imperial Rome.

“The Importance of Being Juvenal” features some 30 interesting paintings from Sanso culled from the past two and a half decades of his career.
