Music for violin and piano at CCP
MANILA, Philippines - Violinist Gina Medina and pianist Mary Anne Espina will perform an all-Filipino program in “Hiyas, Music for Violin and Piano” on Feb. 25, 7:30 p.m., at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City.
Repertoire includes Nicanor Abelardo’s Violin Sonata, Fr. Manuel Maramba’s Theme and Variation, Ernani Cuenco’s May Lihim ang Gabi, Lucino Sacramento’s Capriccio Sarcastico for Violin and Piano, Angel Pena’s Philippine Serenade, and Gilopez Kabayao’s arrangement of Pamulinawen, Sarung Bangui, and Paru-Parong Bukid.
Medina won first prize in Category B in 1985, and Category C in 1990, in the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA). She will be the featured soloist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Concert Season in 2009 where she will perform Kasilag’s Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Agripino Diestro.
Medina is a faculty member of the St. Scholastica’s College School of Music, UST Conservatory of Music, UP College of Music Graduate Studies, and Philippine Research for Developing Instrumental Soloists.
Espina is a 2007 Aliw Awardee for the Best Instrument Category.
She earned her masters of arts in music, summa cum laude, from the University of Santo Tomas under the tutelage of Filipino pianists Manuel Maramba, OSB, and Dean Raul Sunico of the UST Conservatory of Music.
