'Walang Sugat' at UP Theater

-

Gawad CCP Para sa Sining awardee Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation Inc. brings to life Severino Reyes’ and Fulgencio Tolentino’s Walang Sugat (Not Wounded) from Feb. 11 to 13, 6 p.m. at the UP University Theater.

Reyes, who is regarded as the father of the sarsuwela, wrote his masterpiece in 1902 as his statement against imperialism. The scenes depicted the cruelty of the Spanish friars and how the Filipinos died in their hands. But his story takes an amusing turn as its hero Tenyong outwits the people trying to separate him from his love interest Julia. This unexpected twist has made the sarsuwela very popular among theater audiences and moviegoers for the musical has been produced on film twice.

The Barasoain Kalinangan Foundation Inc. (BKFI) is a theater group, which utilizes traditional art forms such as the awit, sayaw, balagtasan, moro-moro, senakulo, kundiman and sarswelang Tagalog. It develops and promotes the richness of Bulacan history and culture through its original productions that pay tribute to Bulacan heroes and artists.
