'Art after 40' at Sining Kamalig
After 19 years, Sining Kamalig — a progressive art gallery established during the early ‘70s by sisters, Vida A. Balboa and Corito A. Kalaw — re-enters the local art scene with its opening exhibit “Art after 40” which is on view until Jan. 8, 2009 at its new home at the fourth floor of Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.
The show features works of senior artists Alfredo Liongoren, Nestor Olarte Vinluan, Gus Albor, and Norberto Carating Jr.
“Sining Kamalig has an important place in our contemporary art history,” says Joy Dayrit.

Renato Orara at SLab
Renato Orara rendered human ears in library books and produced corresponding photographic prints with the books’ call number labels affixed to them in “Library Bookworms” which opens on Jan. 8, 2009 at SLab (Silverlens Lab), 2320 Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City.
The library books are shelved in libraries, while the photo prints are displayed in the gallery. These prints also serve as maps that disclose the locations of the drawings. To begin the search for the original artworks, one may come to the gallery to view the photo prints, jot down the works’ call numbers, and obtain a list of participating libraries. Thus the gallery becomes a library while the libraries become the galleries.
