‘Hairstyling is a form of communication’

MULTIPLE CHOICE - Luis Espiritu Jr. - The Philippine Star

In this age of fashion and beauty, the nowness in hair care is all about globalization.Breaking cultural and style boundaries, this immersion into oneness has transcended into Toni&Guy’s up-to-date “hairxperiment.”

Bill Watson, International artistic director and education director for China and the southern hemisphere, recently visited cosmopolitan Manila to share the latest about hair at the SMX Meeting Room in SM Aura, Bonifacio Global City.

Being one of the frontrunners in the industry, Watson, a renowned hair stylist, cited the unlimited possibilities in fashioning the Filipino. Through “hairxperiment,” understanding the essence of beauty has evolved into the contemporary lifestyle.

Watson said, “I don’t think of a hair type as ‘Filipino.’ Thanks to the Internet where everything feels and seems global, you don’t have to deny yourself of hair choices just because of your geography. I think that people should have their option to do whatever they want, wherever place they are in the world.”

In his recent visits in the Asian region, Watson conducted seminars and trainings to update the brand’s pool of hair artists. As head of the Toni&Guy academy in Beijing, Watson believes in one’s constant need to be current and relevant with the times.

This holiday season,  hairxperiment focuses on the mod ‘60s and/or the bohemian vibe of the ‘70s. “You can go for an imperfect blow-dry, with a little bit over your eyes, old fringes, and little ears sticking out. Little details like that are to feel right at the moment,” Watson explained.

For color, highlights and blonde are the current must-haves. From California to golden skating blondes, sun worshippers hair are the  favorite palette of choice. Overall, the current look is classy and neat. “It’s not about the length, it’s not about the color because all of us in the world have different colors. Make sure your hair is being cut and styled cleanly,” Watson added.

And for the guys, the scruffy look of summer is here to stay with a more polished and neat demeanor.

Trends come and go, what’s relevant in fashioning your hairstyle is having a sense of identity. Beyond the color, curls and cuts, one must communicate his or her own reality.  Hairstyling is a form of communication, and the stylist is an instrument to guide one’s personal style.

“We as hairstylists don’t cut heads — we cut people and people are our entity. What you wear is what you want to communicate to others, just like hairstyling,” explained Watson. More importantly, the essence should reflect the real you beyond surface beauty. “Whatever hairstyle you choose, make sure it speaks nothing more but what and who you are,” Watson concluded.
