‘Journalist of the Year’
The Rotary Club of Manila — the first and most prestigious Rotary Club in Asia — recognized the country’s top journalists and media outfits during the awarding ceremonies for the 2014 RCM Journalism Awards held at the Ballroom of the New World Makati Hotel.
This year’s outstanding roster of winners is led by Rappler’s Maria Ressa, who received the “Journalist of the Year†award, while the “Opinion Writer of the Year†award went to Jojo Robles of Manila Standard Today.
Broadcast journalists from ABS-CBN and DZMM made a sweep of the Broadcast category honors with Atom Araullo and Bernadette Sembrano-Aguinaldo winning the Male and Female Broadcast Journalist of the Year respectively for the TV category while Anthony Taberna and Niña Corpuz emerged as the Male and Female Broadcast Journalist winners respectively for radio.
GMA-7 or the Kapuso Network meantime took home the honors for Television Station of the Year while Aliw Broadcasting’s DWIZ emerged as the Radio Station of the Year. The Philippine Daily Inquirer was adjudged Newspaper of the Year while Freeman Cebu was this year’s awardee for the Regional Newspaper category. Business World was adjudged the Business Newspaper of the Year, while a Special Award was bestowed on former senator and STAR columnist Ernie Maceda.
For winning the Newspaper of the Year Award for three years in a row, The Philippine STAR was elevated to the Hall of Fame.
The Rotary Journalism Awards started in 1966, and 48 years later it continues to be one of the most awaited and most distinguished award to be ever given to media practitioners in the country.
The RCM Journalism Awards is recognized by Rotary International, giving the accolade more meaning and prestige. We were informed that there will soon be a Rotary International Journalism Awards where our local nominees can vie for the Rotary International Award. For now, congratulations to all the winners!
