Manila Rotary launches 18th Journalism Awards

THIS WEEK ON PEOPLEASIA - The Philippine Star

In 1996, the Rotary Club of Manila established the Journalism Awards to honor the most outstanding journalists in print, television and radio. Over the years, individuals who have contributed to the media profession and distinguished themselves in tri-media have been honored, with the nominees and awardees carefully deliberated on by the Journalism Awards Committee with concurrence from the RCM general assembly.

Being the oldest and most prestigious in Asia, the Manila Rotary has considerable stature and influence and we came to realize this when we became chairman of the Journalism Committee in 2013. We all know the important role of media in this country when it comes to shaping opinions, influencing government policy and most importantly, exposing wrongdoings from public servants. So it is heartening to know the media people keep the RCM Journalism Awards in high regard.

Manila Rotary members are among the most distinguished in society, business and other fields, with each one having strong opinions on current issues that impact society, business and government. All of them were very pleased when we explained the process in selecting the nominees and the eventual winners, among them The Philippine STAR, which will be elevated to the Hall of Fame for winning the Newspaper of the Year award for several years in a row.

The awarding ceremonies will be held on May 22 at the Ballroom of the New World Makati Hotel.
