The bedhead beauty
MANILA, Philippines - The bedhead or “just got out of bed” hairstyle was made famous by Gossip Girl’s Serena van der Woodsen, played by Hollywood hottie, Blake Lively.
Most Asians lust for big, bold curls, when in fact, unless done right in proportion to one’s hair length and cut, can make one easily look like a little girl or look overdone due to the excess hairspray to keep the curls in place.
Then of course, there’s the wrestling with the curling iron as curling one’s hair isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do, especially if you’ve only got a few minutes to spare.
Take businesswoman Kim Yaoza who admits to having a very busy work schedule but wishes to keep her locks full of volume, sexy yet easy to achieve. Since Asian hair is much heavier due to its dark pigment, curls go limp fast and lose their form. So I taught her how to pull a “Serena” simply with the use of these easy-to-find tools:
1. Salt-Water Spray
You know that feeling when you’re at the beach and your hair gets all crunchy and it looks like it was wind-blown? It’s a result of the sea salt deposits on your hair, giving it added volume and texture.
It can be difficult to find a texturizer spray so why not make your own instead by mixing in a spray bottle dispenser, two teaspoons of sea salt with 8fl.oz. distilled water (regular water has lime deposits that can weigh hair down).
2. Your Hands
Tilt your head down so your strands are upside down. This will help create more volume starting from the roots of your hair.
Spray the salt mixture as you would hairspray. Spray generously about six inches away from your hair, including the roots.
Using your hands, scrunch your hair to create texture. Slightly tug the hair to give it added lift.
Then tilt head up and keep on scrunching until you get the desired effect.
Simply re-scrunch hair to retouch your messy ‘do throughout the day.
