Franchette Acosta: A beautiful mind
MANILA, Philippines - If intelligence were to take a form, the body of evidence would inarguably be seen in lawyer Franchette Acosta.
The bio of Franchette will reveal her no-nonsense accomplishments. In 1994, she graduated magna cum laude from UP Diliman, where she took up a degree in Business Economics. In 1998, she took up Law at the UP College of Law, where she graduated cum laude and valedictorian of the class. She ranked third in the 1999 Bar Examinations. In 2002, as a Global Hauser Scholar, she went on to finish her Masters of Law at the New York University School of Law.
“I decided to become a lawyer when I was 13,” she says, revealing that her decision was greatly influenced by her father, grandfather and other relatives who are all lawyers.
Franchette, a partner at the Villaraza Cruz Marcelo and Angangco law firm since 2005, specializes in corporate law, particularly in mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and securities.
“I enjoy what I do because my job challenges me. My challenge every day is to constantly find solutions to the cases I handle,” says the winsome lawyer.
Her job, extremely cerebral as it is, is balanced by the simple joys she gets at home from her husband and their six-year-old son. She looks forward to their bonding time together — either by traveling or playing golf together.
“I read to my son a lot,” Franchette adds of another bonding moment she spends with her son. She herself is a bibliophile. Before getting hooked on the works of her favorite authors Ernest Hemingway and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Franchette, as a child, was first enamored by Laura Lee Hope’s The Bobbsey Twins. With a charming smile, she adds, “I still dream of taking my master’s degree in Literature somewhere in Europe.”
Franchette, second of four siblings, says she had a simple and quiet childhood. “My parents taught me to work hard and to be generous. They taught me to go to church and to share my blessings with others,” she says.
“If I had a good year, the people who work with me will also have a good year,” she adds.
Though highly logical, Franchette believes in taking chances and taking the risks. “You do what you want to do so at the end of the day you don’t have regrets. It’s worse to have regrets. It’s better to take risks,” she ends.
