Having a ball

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada -

I sometimes think that the month of March was given its name because of the ritual that graduating students have to perform in order to rise to Life’s next level. The conferment of diplomas is a tradition usually conducted with the music of Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance” in the background. Equally anticipated is the Graduation Ball — that social event where school seniors (ladies and gents alike) celebrate the end of term papers, exams and recitations. For college students, this is their very last prom ever.

Whereas in the past, ladies would engage the services of a couturier for their grad balls, nowadays preparing for a graduation ball need not be as tedious nor need it drain the pocket. Off-the-rack gowns are readily available for a fraction of the cost of a made-to-order ensemble.

Anne Bichelmeier, designer of the RTW line Viola, offers these tips on purchasing the perfect outfit for this special occasion:

1) Collect and select  Never purchase the first outfit that you find (no matter how tempting). Take time out to go to several stores and check out as many brands as possible.

2) Have an idea of what silhouettes work for you as this cuts your selection time incredibly.

3) Take advantage of the availability of stretch material. Fabric such as jersey makes it easier to have a better fit as it often adjusts to your body (Within reason ladies! We do NOT want you purchasing smaller dress sizes simply because the fabric is stretch. You are a graduate NOT a human suman!)

4) Purchase your outfit at least a month before your event so as to allow for small alterations if needed.

5) Be conscious of your makeup and accessories. No matter how lovely your gown or dress is, your overall look may be ruined if your face is poorly made up, your hair not properly coiffed and your accessories mismatched or overloaded.

Our last piece of advice is simply to relax and (fashionably) enjoy your well-deserved celebration! To the graduates of 2012 — our heartiest congratulations!

Viola is available in SM Makati, North Edsa, Megamall, Mall of Asia, Cubao, Cebu, Southmall and Fairview.
