Talk about true classics and Sperry Top-Sider comes to mind. Here’s the story behind the American original.
As avid sailor Paul Sperry watched his cocker spaniel, Prince, run across the ice on a winter’s day in Connecticut, he noticed his dog’s amazing ability to maintain traction on the slippery surface. Turning over Prince’s paw, he observed hundreds of tiny cracks and cuts going in all directions. These wave-like grooves became the inspiration for Sperry’s latest patent, called Razor-SipingTM, and were instrumental in maximizing the traction and performance of the Authentic Original Sperry Top-Sider that was first introduced in 1935.
Over the course of the brand’s history, Sperry Top-Sider has outfitted the American Armed Forces, cultivated a fiercely loyal following of world-renowned sailors and continually developed new technology to remain the leader in water performance footwear. Over the past few years, the brand has proactively evolved beyond this and into casual and dress footwear including a range of Oxford, chukka and desert boot-inspired shoes that offer the brand’s signature marriage of design and performance. From the classic boat shoe to collaborations with the trendiest names in fashion such as Band of Outsiders, Barneys New York, Jeffrey and Opening Ceremony, Sperry Top-Sider is always pushing the envelope in innovation and fashion while keeping true to its authentic heritage.
Sperry has had a long-standing connection to water enthusiasts from weekend boaters to the world’s best athletes. The brand’s partnerships with respected organizations such as US Sailing, the US Sailing Team and National Safe Boating Council are reflected in its best-in-class performance products that are tested and enhanced through valuable feedback from these groups. Through these collaborations, it launched the state-of-the-art Ventus sailing shoe last year, which is among several Sperry styles worn by the US Sailing Team.
