Summer 2012 beckons

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada -

Oj Hofer is back to his default colors of black and white. This time, however, he introduces new patterns and interesting finishing to his chic streetwear. He also accessorizes his pieces with the exclusive blingblings of German designer Miranda Konstantinidou.

Hallmarks of this collection are the inventive cut and minimal seam work of the seemingly basic garments. Unisex gauze robes in either black or white have gusseted sleeves and cleverly constructed seams.

“I used only one pattern piece for the left and the right side of the jacket and one more pattern piece for the hood where usually you would need at least four pattern pieces,” says Oj. The draped tank dresses, the tops and shirts with sheer sleeves, mini and maxi skirts are also interesting when laid out on the flat. Oj calls them croissant clothes because they curve out to the left or right in a calculated angle like the French pastry.

The military jackets in organic linen, unisex drop-crotch pants and stretch lace numbers were sold out before the show. The designer reveals that friends (fellow designers) and new clients (including a female celebrity known for her high fashion role at a recent television series) have placed orders.

“It’s quite interesting. The designs, which sold very well, were the unisex ones. Perhaps fashionable people have become bored with too much froufrou?” he rhetorically ends.
