Carole Cuasay: Living forward
MANILA, Philippines - She says her experiences early in her childhood made her the strong person that she is now. “I’ve learned that in order to move on, there should be acceptance that change is always for the better,” says Carolina “Carole” Cuasay, who, when asked about the turning points in her life, lists down the separation of her parents when she was just seven and losing her childhood best friend in a plane crash. Also on the list is her big move to San Francisco. “My biggest achievement is being able to live independently at a very young age.” Carole acknowledges that through her mom’s guidance, she was able to establish herself in the US. “My mother has been the ultimate source of my strength. There is nothing greater than a mother’s love for her child. She knows me better than myself.”
Carole, who finished a degree in International Studies (Major in European Studies) from the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, started her career abroad at Neiman Marcus in Chanel Accessories. She then became a sales assistant for Dolce & Gabbana RTW and a personal shopper again at Neiman Marcus. After almost four years, she moved to Barneys New York as sales coordinator in the men’s department. Currently, she is a personal stylist in San Francisco.
“I have almost five years worth of stories. But if I were to handpick my favorites, it’s having met with legendary designers such as Manolo Blahnik, Carolina Herrera, Christian Louboutin, Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan and many more,” gushes Carole. “Hearing them talk about their collections, business and marketing strategies is very inspirational. Being in the same room with them is just simply overwhelming, let alone exchange random conversations with these brilliant designers.”
Because of her line of work, it is a given that the 32-year-old careerwoman’s schedule is very hectic. So for Carole, breakfast is essential and coffee is obligatory. What are the things then she can’t leave the house without? “My iPhone because I’m so attached to the people who matter to me. My watch, too, because I would like to be on time. And my earrings because without them, I feel naked.”
It is also important for Carole to look her best, especially that she deals with fashion experts all the time. So she recognizes the help makeup lends to women like her. “Makeup should enhance one’s beauty and not mask it. You owe it to yourself to look good. It’s a simple formula for confidence and good well being,” she says. Carole observes that the makeup industry has evolved so much — from eyelash curlers to close-to-nothing foundations — and that she’s thankful for these product advances. The fashionista swears by Ever Bilena’s natural brow liner and pink lipstick.
Carole, who says that she’s always had a positive outlook in life, believes that “life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forward.” With all her achievements in the fashion industry, Carole feels blessed all the more to be surrounded by a loving family and supportive friends.
