What’s in a stone?

- Luis Espiritu Jr. -

What’s in a stone? Oftentimes we wonder what allure does such masterpiece have? Could it be in the dazzling appeal of luster, the precision of cut, the attraction of its rarity, the enchantment of colour or the flawlessness of its clarity? Whatever it may be, a stone is and will always be preciously significant.

In ancient civilization, stones were glorified by royalty, adorned by rulers and worshipped as representations of gods, goddesses, deities and the likes. Their origins can be found in mythology, folklores, tales and remnants of pre-historic time as seen in early forms of art. The discovery of its kinds and varieties has captured the world in endless fascination. The stone and the glorious appeal that comes with it have evolved through time. From a symbol, figure of ornamentation or representation, its purpose today has found its way to the parameters of global conservation and breakthroughs in the scientific world. Though its attraction is significantly of countless captivating wonders, the stone continues to characterize precious beauty in its entire splendor.

In the Philippines, the presence of the stone is deeply embedded in our culture and can be traced back to the pre-Hispanic era. Our ancestors imparted to our identity the art of ornamentation and in modern times, it is now known as jewelry design. Stones have been fused with indigenous materials to create pieces of decoration and embellishment. Today, it represents an integral part of local fashion and has transcended into small and big scale establishments and enterprises that contribute to the development of an industry that is still growing.  Despite the lack of technological advancement and support from institutions, the local scene is flourishing with so much talent and has been noticed internationally for excellence in design and craftsmanship.

Up and coming jewelry designer Billy Jean Sioco-Chuaunsu is a testament of the power of the stone. Her fascination for stones has transformed a hobby into a business for her art. Having a degree in Interior Design, the artist plays on patterns, shapes, colors and textures to create chic feminine pieces for her line like bangles, earrings, necklaces and brooches. It is an expression of the artist’s understanding of beauty in a stone.

Stones have and will still continue to capture our curiosity, interests and imagination. The beauty of it lies in its overwhelming quality that’s continuously being discovered through time. And that is what’s in a stone.
