Mom’s the Champ: Marilu Toda-Batchelor

Bianca R. Salonga - The Philippine Star

A cozy home, weekends spent at the ballpark and summer travelling to various exotic destinations are few of the things that make for a picture perfect life. To see one’s children win a tennis game or to be around as they watch a Formula One race is among a mother’s simple joys. Marilu Batchelor, a full-time mother to her two boys, James and William, and loving wife to The Peninsula Manila’s GM David Batchelor, takes great pride in being your quintessential mom. Her days are packed with activities that involve taking good care of her family as she insists on driving her children to school, attending parent-teacher meetings and picking them up in the afternoons. While help is always around, Marilu also prefers cooking meals for the three men in her life. Having lived in Hong Kong for some time, Marilu has become accustomed to doing everything all on her own.

She recalls, "We were based in Hong Kong up until 2001. We would occasionally visit Manila to see our family and friends. Moving here did not really change our lives that much because we felt right at home in Manila." She adds, "Around here it’s much easier since there’s so much help around."

With two very active and affectionate boys to chase after day in and out, there’s not a single dull day for Marilu. "My life revolves around these boys. My weekends are devoted to their sports – tennis, soccer, baseball. I am very involved in their lives and I think my kids will tell you that I am very fun, always around. For me, it’s important that I don’t miss a moment in their growing years. I am their biggest fan!" declares the charming mom. Marilu finds that being a parent keeps her young. "I just love being a mom. It’s really such a blessing. Once you become a parent, your life changes. Suddenly you are no longer responsible for just your life, but for theirs also. The great thing about being a mom is that you begin to see the world through your children’s eyes." This probably explains why Marilu’s face lights up when talking about her boys. And just when one begins to think that things couldn’t get any better, she says, "I am most fulfilled when they give me handmade cards on special occasions. These are the best presents."

For a hands-on, 24/7 mother like Marilu, there are no lunch breaks or days off. She is more than glad to take on the role. "Of course, you also have to know when it’s time to give them space or sit them down and have a good talk."

The mention of her boys immediately brings a smile to her face. She can go on for hours recalling unforgettable mother-and-child moments. It is, indeed, a picture perfect life, the kind that can outdo any Kodak snapshot. She ends, "I believe that the key to being a good parent is by always being there for your kids and encourage them. We have one shot at it so do the best." And that’s why this mom’s a champ.
