BEAUTY'S SECRETS - BEAUTY'S SECRETS By Chechel Joson -
Did you know that the skin on our lips is thinner and has less melanin than the skin on our face? Lip tissue is very sensitive and so proper care of our lips should be taken seriously.

It’s very important to protect your lips. Apply lip balm every time you feel your lips are dry. Make it part of your beauty regimen to exfoliate and moisturize your lips. How do you exfoliate your lips? Brush your lips. Yes, brushing your lips removes dead skin and will take away any chapping. It also plumps up the lip temporarily for that famous "pouty" look. But don’t over exfoliate. Only do this when your lips become really dry and chapped.

After this, moisturize. Most lip balms offer sun protection as well. For extremely dry lips, keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of water and slick a little bit of honey on your lips. Honey is rich in moisturizers and provides a protective barrier. Avoid using lipsticks that may leave a dry finish on your already dry lips like ultra matte or long wearing formulations. They go on moist and wet and will dry within a few seconds they also tend to chip and peel off after. Your best bet is to use lip gloss. They will make your lips look fresh, supple and natural.

Line thin lips on the extreme edge and not outside the natural lip line. Use a lip pencil with the same color as your lipstick. If you want your lips to appear bigger, carefully line the lips all the way to the corners of the mouth. Try to avoid leaving a line around your mouth when your lipstick color fades leaving the outlined penciled area. Make sure when you do use a lip pencil line the entire mouth. The pencil will also help in making the lip color last longer. Thin lips may look "mean-mouthed" and may appear even smaller under dark, hard lip color. Lighter, sheerer colors and gloss will make lips look fuller and healthier.

As for the lucky women blessed with full lips (otherwise known as Angelina Jolies), if you wish to tone them down, use softer, sheerer colors. You can definitely afford to skip the liner. Color should be focused on the center of the mouth then spread the color out onto the edges.

To get the juicy look:

• Cleanse. Tone and moisturize if needed. Apply lip balm.

• Groom eyebrows.

• Apply concealer to even out skin tone. Blend well.

• (Optional) Apply foundation on lips.

• Set entire face and mouth with loose powder.

• Curl lashes then apply mascara.

• With a lip pencil, apply on the natural lip line of entire lips.

• Using a lip brush, apply lip color.

• Final touch: Add lip gloss.

• Avoid lipstick on your teeth. Insert index finger in your mouth. Close lips lightly around it. Pull out finger.

Tips:

• Lip pencils will help make your lipstick last longer as it holds lipstick in place and will help prevent lipsticks from "bleeding." Make sure when lining lips, follow the natural line of your lips.

• To help lipstick last longer, after applying lipstick, blot your lips, then reapply and blot again.

• Stretch your lips when applying lip color for better and even coverage.

• Applying foundation on lips will also help in making your lip color last longer but it may dry so after color application, add gloss over it.

• When retouching your lips, especially if you have already worn it throughout the day and want to look refreshed after office, wipe off all products on your lips. Apply lip balm. Start lip application over again.

Makeup guru Henry Calayag says, "Lips can be sexy, intimidating and can sometimes be sad. But no matter what the mood is, lipstick is the most favored cosmetic among women because it’s the easiest and fastest to apply. Some even do it without a mirror and can easily apply it even when they’re on the move."

It really does amaze me when I observe women how they retouch their lips. It’s a good thing when one can apply lipstick even without a mirror. Touching up in public is fine if you’re comfortable doing so. Although during a formal business lunch, I would suggest you do it in the powder room. If you do not have time to do so, then try this, when eating, avoid scooping the food from the silver with your lips. Instead, eat with your teeth and tongue. Sounds puzzling? Try it and practise – in private – in front of a mirror before you do it in public. This way you won’t look funny and be the topic of the "weird eater" on the lunch table.

It pays to take good care of your lips. This doesn’t take much effort. Do on your lips what you do on your face. Moisturize and exfoliate a few times in a week. Make an effort to achieve soft, supple, healthy inviting lips. Purse them slightly… leave them fantasizing on ways to kiss it….
