Have a productive summer
April 4, 2004 | 12:00am
Its summer again and for kids this means vacation from school. "Yehey!" as the kids would say because they dont need to wake up early, they have no assignments and they can stay up late.
Aside from traveling, visiting friends and relatives, there are many other activities this summer which you and your children might want to try. Here are some of them:
Yoga. Yoga is perfect if you want an activity that will benefit you physically and spiritually. For inquiries, call the Yoga Foundation at tel. no. 515-1268.
Rock climbing. Power up with this sport. Call Power Up at tel. no. 932-7273.
Cardio workouts. Dancing, ballet, jazz, ballroom, break dancing, cardio funk, Latin aerobics and indoor cycling, are just some of the classes offered at BodyWorx along West Avenue. Call tel. no. 410-3866.
Acting. If you want to hone you dramatic skills, here are some acting workshops you can try: S.N.A.C.K. (Summer Nature & Arts Camp for Kids, headed by my manager Bibsy Carballo, is offering an acting workshop to be led by Mr. Nestor Torre. Guest lecturer is Bodjie Pascua and tenor Montet Acoymo. It will be held from April 23 to 25, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Johns Academy at 148 Jose Gil St., San Juan. Call tel. no. 721-0801.
Trumpets, Shangri-La also offers musical theater workshops as well as courses for newscasting, playing various instruments, voice and dance.
Cooking. Future chefs and restaurateurs may enhance their culinary skills at the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA) which has a Junior Chef program. This is perfect for teens who enjoy whipping up dishes in the kitchen. You may call tel. no. 426-4837.
Sports. Those who enjoy outdoor activities can get into sports. There are many schools that offer a variety of sports programs. Why dont you check out what sports your school offers?
Gyms also offer sports training. Taekwondo is taught at BodyWorx which offers karate, too.
Muaythai, a form of martial arts which I am now learning, is offering classes at PSC (ULTRA) at Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. You may inquire at 637-7647 (telefax).
You may also try badminton which is enjoyed by so many these days. Try it at Smashville located at 100 Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City (tel. no. 578-9240; Asuncion Badminton Center where my children are taking up lessons this summer. It is located at 20 E. Maclang (formerly Mons) corner 288 P. Guevarra streets, San Juan (tel. no. 725-2568).
Aside from all these wonderful activities, summertime is also a chance to bond with family and friends. So why not:
Help your mom with her household chores?
Cook with a friend?
Play a board game with ate or kuya?
Or, if you like to do some charity work, help out in your church or village. Ask your brothers and sisters or your friends to join you.
Since you have more time on your hands, write to relatives or friends abroad.
Make your summer productive and fruitful. Challenge yourself. Learn something new. Make new friends. Explore! These experiences will enrich you as a person and will allow you to experience life from a different perspective.
Have a great summer!
