The look of Summer
February 1, 2004 | 12:00am
Most international fashion designers showed off a Spring-Summer 2004 collection that celebrated femininity. The "girlie-girl" look. Sultrier
more seductive
more mysterious
more confident
more feminine. And from this came about this seasons makeup look.
Inspired by this theme, International makeup artists like Pat McGrath, Tom Pecheux, Dick Page and Max Delorme created different looks for this season to complement each of the designers collections. They used a lot of earth tones, or combined warm colors with cool colors like blues and greens. Pat McGrath created the faces for Luis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Donna Karan, YSL, Valentino, Versace and Gucci. She repeatedly used earth tones and jazzed them up by using different techniques and combinations this season. Tom Pecheux for Celine, Bluemarine, Proenza Schouler, Missoni used mostly earth tones as well. Dick Page for Narciso Rodriguez, Helmut Lang and Marc Jacobs used shades of pinks and earth tones. Max Delorme for Costume National in Paris mixed peach, pink, purple, gold and green on the eyes.
Earth tones match almost all skin types. They flatter most skin tones and can give you either a natural almost no makeup look or you can go a little bit darker on the eyes and create drama. Cool colors are clear and bright so when used to combine with warm colors, they give you that natural look with a hint of color perfect for those "mysterious eyes."
This is one of the looks of the coming season. Bronze. Looks fairly easy and natural if you already have this type of skin. Its healthy, glowing and very gorgeous. Youll hardly need any makeup at all. I say just put some tinted moisturizer with sunscreen on, line your eyes with a brown eyeliner pencil, curl your lashes and apply mascara if you want, some lip gloss and youre all set for both day and night. If you have fair skin, dont feel bad you can still get this look. The same goes for most skin types. The important thing to remember is to use the right shades of brown.
Now that weve got the colors we need as our guide to update our makeup look for this season, lets go back to the basics. Skin. How to get that bronze glow. When you saw the bronzed-up images in beauty magazines, you most probably ran out the door and went under the sun to get you all tanned up. But first things first. Always keep in mind to seek shade between the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so you dont damage your skin as much. Going under the sun is damaging enough to the skin so make sure to use sunscreen.
Sun protection formula or SPF lets you know how long you can stay under the sun without burning. For example, if you can stay in the sun for about 15 minutes before your skin starts to turn pink then applying a sunscreen rated SPF 15 will allow you to stay under the sun 15 times longer. So with SPF 15 you can stay in the sun for 225 minutes without burning. A product with an SPF2 blocks only about 50 percent of the UVB rays; SPF10 filters out about 85 percent of the UVB rays; an SPF15 stops about 95 percent, and an SPF30-50 stops about 97 percent. These percentages explain why you still might get some color after prolonged exposure to the sun despite slathering sunscreen on your skin. This is why it is very important to wear sunscreen everyday as part of your skin regimen. It will help prevent skin damage due to the harmful effects of the UVB and UVA radiation.
This is why I say just "fake" it. There are so many brands out there for you to use to get that bronze glow without having to go under the sun at all. Theyre called self-tanners. It doesnt matter what product you use really because the key to a good result is the application which can get tricky. Best way to apply self-tanners is after bathing.
Towel dry.
Apply minimal moisturizer all over body.
Apply self-tanner while naked to cover all areas.
Apply evenly.
Let dry.
Wait for at least 15 minutes before getting dressed. Do not exercise or swim for at least three hours.
Prepare the skin. Cleanse. Tone and moisturize if needed.
Groom eyebrows.
Apply concealer to even out skin tone. Blend well.
Set with loose powder.
Fill in eyebrows with pencil. Finish filling in with eyeshadow in dark brown. Comb eyebrows to blend the pencil and the shadow.
Combine two shades of brown thats close to the color of blush youll be using which is bronze. Blend well.
Line the eyes using navy blue eyeliner pencil.
Curl Lashes. Apply mascara.
Mix shades of pink to get that natural color of your lips.
Finish with a bronze colored blush and there you go.
This is one of my favorite makeup looks the bronze look. Its very romantic and mystifying to me. It demands subtle but undeniable attention. It makes you want to keep on staring at the face and wonder what she has on. Wear it day or night youll still be seen as breathtaking. So if you want to look as natural and mysterious, feel as sexy and feminine then color with browns.
