(JC Buendia and I are in a coffee shop. I am sipping Earl Grey tea and JC is on his fourth cappuccino.)
Joanne: Can you imagine? It has been a year since we had our little prom discussion!
JC: Yes! It is prom time again!
Joanne: Have the styles changed since then?
JC: Girls are very influenced by what they see on TV and on the movie screen. So the movie characters, the singers and the actresses that have been so visible these last few months are the ideals of today.
Joanne: Like?
JC: Like the Pop Divas–Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and Mandy Moore. Girls who look up to Pop Divas go for styles that show off shoulders, toned abs and beautiful backs. Parang ’70s revisited! Lots of feathers and glitters!
Joanne: Who is the most popular movie character this year?
JC: Most definitely Liv Tyler’s Arwen in Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. Legions of teeners want to look like... elves! Long hair, soft, gothic. I have to advise the girls not to eat a day before the prom to attain the pale ethereal look.
The vintage look has also come back. Usually it is the solid fashionista who chooses this style because only a few girls can get away with wearing lola’s flapper dress or mommy’s crinoline. It takes a mind of a fashion magazine editor to mix the old and the new. One more thing, to fit in those clothes, you have to weigh 105 pounds or less.
Joanne: So, hindi na ako puwede diyan?
JC: Matagal na! (Joanne gives JC a dagger look.)
JC: Finally we have the Hollywood leading lady look inspired by Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The leading lady gowns should be worn with aplomb. Women who prefer the leading lady look like trumpet silhouettes, décolletage necklines, make dramatic entrances and fabulous exits.
Joanne: And speaking of fabulous exits, I think this is the perfect time to bid adieu!
