OH YES, IT'S JOHNNY! - Johnny Litton -

Latin passion ruled the night as ATR Wines & Spirits introduced Torres Wines and Brandies, the finest liquors from Spain, during the Ten at the Tent party at the NBC Tent, The Fort. The occasion marked the launch of Torres Ten Gran Reserva, one of the best brandies in the world.

As the over 1,000 invitees were awed by the venue which was transformed into a wine cellar. Each lady visitor was greeted and given a long-stemmed rose by young señoritas in gypsy costumes.

The Tent featured an impressive Spanish plaza complete with bars, tapas outlets, awnings, street lamps and a coffee station. Chairs encircled huge parasols like in the fresco cafés in Madrid and Barcelona. Wine barrels were used as cocktail tables.

A mime entertained the crowd, artists painted on-the-spot portraits and a human statue in silver paint stood unmoving for almost three hours! As groups sipped their choice of Torres wines–Sangre de Toro, Viña Sol, Viña Esmeralda, Gran Coronas Cabernet Sauvignon and Mas La Plana Cabernet Sauvignon–a Spanish guitarist strummed lively tunes. As the guitarist serenaded us, our tummies sought more of the scrumptious food prepared by the chefs at the Center of Culinary Arts.

ATR Wines president Arthur Reyes and GM Dr. Ruel Reyes spared nothing for the spectacular launch. After all, as the guest of honor, Spanish Ambassador Tomas Rodriguez Pantoja said, "Torres Wines are some of the finest wines made in Spain."

Top execs of Torres Wines flew in all the way from the Iberian Peninsula for the fantastic celebration. Looking particularly distinguished in Barong Tagalog while joining in the fun were Jorge Grosse, international director for sales and marketing of Torres Brandy, top executive Luis de Javier, and Spain’s wine expert Sergio Fiorentini. Jorge presented to Arthur a copy of a centuries-old plaque as a symbol of friendship and relationship between the Torres family and ATR.

In his videotaped message, Miguel Torres, president of Torres Wines, looked so cool posing outside a 15th century cellar. He expressed his regret at being unable to grace the event, but he voiced his optimism at how Torres Wines will fare on the Philippine market, especially with ATR Wines & Spirits at the helm of distributorship.

Torres S.A. is perhaps the largest producer of wines and brandies in Catalonia, where the Torres family has been producing wines since the 17th century. The Philippines is already the biggest market for Torres brandy outside of Spain and Mexico.

A torrid tango and the stirring music of renowned violinist John Lesaca heated up the night. Gina Jane Gray created much buzz with her flamenco number.

The fanfare, staged by Sine Mento’s Paolo Villaluna assisted by Ava Yap, continued with three beautiful young girls in gypsy attire dancing and stomping on the juicy-licious grapes. I even espied some guys trying to peek under the girl’s skirts! My, my, how wine and women can get into your head!

As I turned my head this way and that, I saw VIPs all around me: former Education Secretary Raul Roco; Misamis Oriental Gov. Antonio Calingin and his wife Ching; Canadian Ambassador Robert Colette; Makati Rep. Teddyboy Locsin and his elegant wife Louie; CFBC president emeritus Peter Yu and honorary president Dante Go; Federal Hardware president Jeffrey Ng; BMW’s finance director Alex Thorwirth; Tower Club’s membership director Cyndy Tan-Jarabata and events manager Henree Weiner; Pipol’s Ces Oreña-Drilon; Francis and Mary Ann Lumen; Asian Spirit chairman Noel Oñate; popular couple Dennis and Tessa Valdes; French Baker and Escada’s Johnlu and Marilou Koa; Ado Escudero; Mike Ereñeta; and Eki Cardenas.

Puro Ritmo struck a medley of Latin songs that kept our hearts beating wildly. By then, the passion of Torres already flowed in our blood.

The next day, the first thing we did was to buy crates of Torres Wines which are available in leading supermarkets and wine outlets nationwide.

To Torres Wines and ATR, salud, pesetas y amor!
Greetings
Happy birthday to our celebrator today, Don Francisco Ortigas. Advanced birthday greetings to Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and actress Janice de Belen, Nov. 11; Doris Magsaysay-Ho and Mila Magsaysay Valenzuela, Nov. 14; Makati Rep. Teodoro "Teddyboy" Locsin and Snapshots’ Chris Litton, Nov. 15.
