A magical evening

"A merry heart does good like a medicine." Jo Petty
It was a magical night of myriad delights, the result of a stylishly slick collaboration between the mother and son tandem of Store Specialists, Inc. president Nedy Tantoco and EVP Anton Huang, and the joi de vivre of suave Frenchman Philippe Charriol and his designer daughter Coralie. Philippes chic wife Annick delighted guests that night, too.
We are talking about the Magical Colours of Charriol World, the gala dinner fashion show held at the Makati Shangri-La to launch a new line of leather handbags designed by Coralie Charriol, and also the 2002 collection of Charriol watches and jewelry.
The Rizal ballroom featured a billowy white canopy straight out of the Arabian Nights. Venetian carnival figures dangling from the ceiling added an Italian touch. It was joyous, near-theatrical event with magicians, mime artists, stilt-walkers and acrobats all doing their thing.
Cleverly woven into all the fun and gaiety was the presentation of the six leather handbags. And Charriol would not be Charriol if they did not have bags in exuberant colors.
As the models brandished the handbags on the catwalk, it was quickly obviousjudging by the looks of the high-society set presentthat the bags had easily become must-have accessories if one wanted to be noticed at Rockwell, Glorietta or Greenbelt.
Praises were heaped on Makati Shangri-Las newly installed American executive chef Chris Romine for the sumptuous food. Many of the discerning guests extolled the fare as the best theyve ever partaken of in a Philippine hotel ballroom.
Attending to the guests with a characteristic twinkle in his eyes was Ambassador Bienvenido Tantoco, chairman of the Rustan Group of Companies. At 81, Ambassador Tantoco shows no signs of giving up his fast-paced lifestyle. Having just arrived back from Morocco, he was off soon after the affair for business trips, first to LA and then to Finland.
One of the nights pleasant surprises was the presence of guests of honor, First Brother Arthur Macapagal and his charming wife Mariter. This was a rare sighting of the low-key couple at a social event, and their presence certainly added even more spirit to the occasion.
Senate President Frank Drilon welcomed a break from the stress and strain of being the number three official in the land. With him was Senate Majority Leader Loren Legarda-Leviste, inarguably the most stylish lawmaker in the land, and the extremely sociable Sen. Jun Magsaysay.
Speaker Joe de Venecia was waylaid by affairs of state, but his bubbly wife Gina, on a break from her own busy program of civic projects, more than compensated with her presence.
Other guests included glamorous Rose Marie "Baby" Arenas who was bombarded with questions if she was bringing hot Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli for a September date in Manila.
Baby coyly diverted the queries to Italys engaging Ambassador Umberto Colesanti and his charming wife Clara.
As we left after a night when all the senses had been amply nourished and satisfied, we couldnt help marvelling about the new Charriol handbags being the new ensemble de jour.
The Tower Club continues to be the venue of choice for launchings and fine dining. Noted PR man Bob Zozobrado recently hosted a dinner for client Harry and Maritess Limtong at the Clubs opulent Pinot Room for the successful launch of Blue Mountain Arts products, one of the best-selling international lines of greeting cards.
Top jeweler Helen Ong, meanwhile, hosted a spectacular luncheon for her friends at the Clubs Taipan restaurant. Among those who partook of Helens specially prepared feast were the graceful Imelda Cojuangco; Mellie Ablaza; and Nene Leonor, among others.
Taipan chef Cheong Kwan Leong prepared a grand selection of dimsum delicacies and other mouth-watering dishes that went beyond Helens and the guests expectations.
Indeed, the Tower Club continues to be the place to wine, dine, see and be seen.
