A celebration of five decades of love

Fifty years of marriage was more than a measure of time; it was a testament of shared values, perseverance, and enduring commitment. For Ambassador Francis Chua and his wife, Dr. Betty Chua, their golden anniversary marked not only a personal milestone but a life journey woven together by family, service, and purpose. Their story began at university, where Francis was known as a diligent and thoughtful student. A classmate, Johnny Lao, who would later become his brother-in-law, recognized his character and introduced him to his younger sister, Betty. Their connection grew through meaningful conversations about studies, ideas, and aspirations, an intellectual bond that soon deepened into mutual respect and affection. As their relationship matured, they often worked side by side in their academic pursuits. Francis supported Betty during her thesis work, assisting with research and analysis as an equal partner. Through these shared efforts, they discovered not only compatibility but also the ability to walk life’s long road together.
In 1975, with the blessings of their families, Francis and Betty became engaged. On December 24 of the same year, they were married on Christmas Eve, a date symbolizing hope, faith, and new beginnings. What followed was a marriage defined by steadfast partnership rather than spectacle. Over the next five decades, Ambassador Francis Chua rose from humble beginnings to become a respected leader in Philippine business and Chinese-Filipino society. Known as a bridge-builder, he helped link commerce, government, and international organizations, always focusing on long-term impact and national development. Alongside him stood Dr. Betty Chua, a constant source of strength and wisdom. She built her own distinguished career in corporate leadership, social service, and diplomacy, serving as an honorary consul for several countries and earning an Honorary Doctorate in Law. Her influence was defined by grace, dedication, and sustained service.
Together, their marriage became a true partnership, grounded in trust, faith, and shared purpose. Challenges arose, as they do in any long union, but they faced them with open communication and the belief that every difficulty was a shared responsibility. Their greatest pride lay in their family. Their three children each excelled in their respective fields, reflecting the values instilled by their parents. Now, grandparents Francis and Betty found renewed joy in seeing those values carried forward to the next generation.
As they celebrated their golden anniversary, they looked back not with a sense of accomplishment alone, but with deep gratitude, for each other, for their family, and for the opportunity to serve. Their 50-year journey reminded us that a lasting marriage was not simply about love, but about growing, serving, and becoming better together.
In thanksgiving for this milestone, Francis and Betty renewed their marriage vows on Dec. 26, 2025 at the Santuario de San Antonio Parish. The sacred rite was presided over by Fr. Mark Adame Bakari, OFM, whose presence underscored the spiritual foundation that had sustained their union for five decades. This solemn renewal stood not only as a celebration of enduring love but also as a reaffirmation of faith, commitment, and shared purpose that continued to guide their lives.
