Weighing in on how to manage obesity

Obesity. It seems straightforward, right? In a society where physical appearance is highly valued, obesity is often misunderstood as simply a lack of willpower or self-discipline to eat less and move more.
But if it were really that simple, why hasn’t anything changed? Is it truly about willpower — or is there something more complex at play?
Obesity is a chronic disease
People living with obesity are often shamed and blamed for their condition. This happens because many — including some healthcare professionals — fail to understand that obesity is a chronic disease, not merely a result of poor choices or chance.
Just like other chronic diseases like diabetes or heart disease, obesity involves changes in how the body functions. Recognizing it as a disease allows us to move away from outdated stereotypes and toward a better understanding rooted in science.
Obesity is caused by a combination of factors: genetics, medical conditions, metabolic differences, and psychosocial influences like stress, anxiety, depression, or eating disorders. Add to that poor diet and lifestyle habits, and the picture becomes much more complex.
In the Philippines, obesity is an escalating public health concern. According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), 39% of Filipino adults aged 20 to 59 — nearly four out of 10 — are obese.
That’s a deeply alarming statistic, especially considering that obesity is closely linked to life-threatening conditions like heart disease and diabetes — which are among the leading causes of death in the country.
Without strong, sustained intervention, these health conditions will continue to rise.
Act now before it’s too late
In response to this growing health issue, Watsons Philippines, the country’s leading health and wellness retailer, has partnered with global healthcare company Novo Nordisk to offer free obesity screenings in select Watsons stores.
This initiative aims to promote early detection, raise public awareness, and provide guidance on managing obesity and its related health risks.
“At Watsons, we believe that good health should be accessible to all,” said Joweeh Liao, director for health business unit, finance, property, and store development at Watsons Philippines. “This partnership with Novo Nordisk strengthens that commitment.”
By offering free obesity screenings, Watsons and Novo Nordisk empower individuals and families with the knowledge and tools needed to take control of their health and live better lives.
For Novo Nordisk, the collaboration aligns with its global “Truth About Weight” campaign, which seeks to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote science-based approaches to obesity care.
“Through this screening initiative, we aim not only to make obesity screening more accessible but also to provide a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s health risks and guide them in taking control of their well-being,” said Wei Sun, general manager of Novo Nordisk Philippines.
Beyond the screenings
Watsons continues to strengthen its role as a trusted health partner in the community. With over 1,200 stores nationwide, many operating with extended hours and a growing number open 24/7, Watsons ensures that healthcare is accessible anytime, anywhere.
To support customers on their health journeys, Watsons offers a wide range of medications and tools for weight management, as well as treatment options for obesity-related conditions such as diabetes.
“At Watsons, we live by our brand promise to ‘Look Good, Do Good, and Feel Great’— by helping people care for themselves and their loved ones, and by contributing to the overall well-being of our communities,” Liao added. “By inspiring healthier lifestyles, we create positive change that extends far beyond our store walls.”
Watsons and Novo Nordisk believe that meaningful change begins with collaboration and everyday actions. Together, we can take control and manage obesity more effectively.
