Weddings take place every day all over the world. The month of June, however, has, for centuries now, made room for more nuptial celebrations than the rest of the year.

To explain this curious phenomenon, we could cite Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and childbirth, and after whom the month of June is named. Pre-health insurance Europeans thought that if they got married in “Juno’s month,” they would be able to time conception so that their child would be born by spring the following year. This would avoid the harsh winter months, thereby raising their baby’s chances of survival.

While modern Filipino couples are not burdened by this concern, many of them still subscribe to the tradition of a June wedding. In fact, for six years now, Conrad Manila has been holding an annual bridal fair — “Inspired Beginnings” — this month. The hotel wants to give engaged couples enough time to line up their wedding vendors, which will allow them to possibly schedule a June wedding for next year.

This year, “Inspired Beginnings” returns on June 28 and 29 at the hotel’s Forbes and Taft Ballrooms.

Devotion to love

Opening the wedding showcase on June 28 is renowned designer Francis Libiran with “Devocion,” a solo couture show that will unveil his latest bridal collection featuring 24 gowns and six suits.

“I wanted to introduce to the market something different in terms of color, with a lot of soft tones in nude and pale pink,” says Libiran. “This color scheme best suits the Filipina’s morena complexion. We try to avoid pure white.”

In creating the pieces for his show, Libiran relied on innovations in embroidery. But he also went beyond these to address the design preferences of today’s couples who are about to walk down the aisle.

Aside from exquisitely crafted gowns and suits, couples now want to personalize their wedding outfits.

“Filipino brides are getting more adventurous when it comes to their gowns,” notes Libiran. “They want it more personalized. They want it to show off their personality. For example, I had a bride who wanted a specific pattern to reflect the place where she and her fiancé first met. A groom wanted the Eiffel tower on his barong because that’s where he first saw his bride.”

For “Devocion,” which will be directed by Ariel Lozada, expect to see gowns and suits that tell beautiful love stories.

Aside from his opening night gala, Libiran will be holding a trunk show from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days.

Having whetted guests’ appetites, “Inspired Beginnings” will culminate on the second evening with a multi-designer runway show directed by Robby Carmona. The show will put the spotlight on seven designers: Rian Fernandez, Manny Halasan, Nat Manilag, Ehrran Montoya, Val Taguba, Vee Tan, and Ryan Ablaza Uson.

Like Libiran, their showcase will be a breathtaking parade of unique bridal masterpieces with sophistication and modern elegance.

Art-inspired tablescapes

Adding to the magnificence of the two-day fair are tablescapes by top-tier event stylists. Each stylist was matched with a celebrated Filipino artist, whose masterpieces would inspire the tablescape the stylist would create.

Blooms Events by Allen & JP pays tribute to Arturo Luz; Ginger Gaddi channels the intricate genius of Olivia D’Aboville; Randy Lazaro brings to life the work of National Artist Hernando Ocampo; Drew Menor plays with the lighting excellence of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo; Dave Sandoval reflects the energy of Mauro Malang; Tiger Lim interprets the elegance of Lizanne Uychanco; FJ Sionson brings to the table the surreal imagination of Mark Justiniani; and Kathy Sy-King creates a tablescape inspired by Impy Pilapil’s works.

“This is more than just an event,” says Fabio Berto, general manager of Conrad Manila. “It is a celebration of love, artistry, and a beautiful collaboration and partnership that transforms dreams into reality. This is also a heartfelt tribute to the impeccable talent of Filipino artists.”

Aside from the couture shows, trunk shows, and tablescape displays, “Inspired Beginnings” features booths by leading wedding coordinators, jewellers, makeup artists, and photo and video specialists. Set up at the Taft Ballroom, these vendors will be ready to conduct consultations with attendees.
