Arthritis Q&A

- Perry P. Tan, M.D., FPCP, FPRA -
Q1. Is there a definite cure for arthritis?

Some forms of arthritis are self-limiting (e.g. Viral arthritis). It may disappear in few days time. However, Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and some others may persist or may recur. Medicines may modify or control the disease.

Q2.
Can an arthritic patient live a normal life? Should a child with arthritis quit schooling or should a breadwinner quit working?

Recent developments in medicine have made available new generation medicines and disease modifying drugs for arthritis. Patients with severe arthritis should seek medical help to control the signs and symptoms of arthritis so they may have a better quality of life.

Q3.
I'm confused with hot and cold compress. Some doctors advised me to apply hot compress for arthritis, while others advised me to apply cold. Which one is most appropriate?

I usually advise my patient to apply cold compresses if the affected joints are warm and reddish; the purpose is to suppress the inflammation. On the other hand, I advise them to apply hot compresses when the joints are not warm to relax the muscles and tendons.
