Meet your immune system: The roommate you need to bribe
Face mask-clad pedestrians cross a road in Manila on September 12, 2022. The Philippines on September 12 lifted a requirement for masks to be worn outdoors, more than two years after imposing the ruling as part of health measures against the Covid-19 coronavirus.

A child coughs nearby. Someone sneezes in the elevator. By evening, you’re wondering if you’ve caught something. At times, I worry that public places have become relay stations for viruses.

With COVID-19 still lurking, seasonal flu making its annual tour, and other respiratory viruses making the rounds, our immune systems are working overtime. For a cancer warrior like me, it can be tempting to turn the house into a sterile bunker. Aside from prescribed medications and supplements, I’m sometimes tempted to try an exotic wellness powder that may taste like grass clippings.

Think of your immune system as a high-maintenance, slightly dramatic roommate. He lives in your body rent-free. Neglect him and he’ll throw a tantrum, locking himself in the bedroom and leaving you sniffling.

The good news? He doesn’t ask for cash—just a few daily bribes to keep the peace. Here are five simple ways to keep your favorite roommate happy:

1. Bribe him with a regular bedtime

While you sleep, your body continues carrying out essential immune functions that help defend you against illness. But if you’re scrolling social media until midnight or squeezing in “just one more episode,” insufficient sleep can affect immune function. An exhausted security guard can’t protect the house.

The fix? Set a digital curfew. Whether you’re a child hiding a tablet under the blanket or an adult answering emails at 11 p.m., unplug earlier. Sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s the charging station for your body’s defense team.

2. Feed him real food, not hype

You don’t need miracle supplements to bribe your immune system.

Good nutrition helps your body function at its best. Garlic, ginger and green leafy vegetables contribute beneficial nutrients and compounds. A varied diet of colorful fruits, cooked vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps support normal immune function.

Your gut plays a role, too. No single food can guarantee protection from illness, so your roommate prefers home cooking over hype.

3. Make germs miserable

Handwashing remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to help prevent illness. A quick splash under the tap won’t do; the germs barely notice.

Instead, scrub with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you have children, tell them they’re washing away invisible monster glitter. Sing “Happy Birthday” twice, or the chorus of your favorite song. Your roommate will appreciate that you’re refusing to invite unwanted guests.

4. Get your roommate moving

You don’t need to train for a marathon to support your health. Pushing yourself too hard when you’re exhausted isn’t the goal, either.

A brisk walk, a bike ride, gardening, or a spontaneous living-room dance can support your overall health. Start at a level that suits your fitness and energy, then build gradually. Your roommate appreciates whatever movement your body can comfortably manage. Just don’t leave him sitting on the couch all day.

5. Remember what you’re protecting

Healthy habits aren’t just about avoiding a cold or managing an illness. They’re about protecting your quality of life and staying present for moments that matter: cheering at your child’s graduation, celebrating birthdays, keeping travel plans, sharing Sunday lunches, or enjoying an ordinary afternoon with people you love.

Of course, healthy habits cannot guarantee we’ll avoid illness or replace medical treatment. Staying current on vaccinations, scheduling regular medical check-ups and following your doctor’s advice remain essential. If you’re undergoing cancer treatment, consult your healthcare team before taking any supplements, as some may interact with your medications.

We spend years investing in our homes, careers and retirement. Yet one of our greatest investments is caring for the body that carries us through every joy, challenge and dream.

Your immune system doesn’t ask for perfection. It needs adequate sleep, nourishing food, clean hands and regular movement. Pay your faithful roommate his daily dues, and you’ll give your body a better chance to stay healthy.

Cherish each healthy day and care for your God-given body, which works tirelessly to protect and sustain you. After all, the goal is not merely to survive but to live joyfully, gratefully and fully.
