NPDC brings Rizal’s final journey to life through new AR experience at Rizal Park Luneta

MANILA, Philippines — Visitors to Rizal Park can now experience a new way of learning history as the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) launched a web-based Augmented Reality (AR) self-guided tour at the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on June 19, in celebration of our National Hero’s 165th Birth Anniversary.
The AR experience allows visitors to explore moments from Rizal’s final days through interactive animations and narrated historical content by scanning QR codes through mobile devices.
The launch was marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting led by NPDC executive director Cecille Lorenzana, deputy executive director Jezreel Gaius Apelar and Scarletbox founder and CEO Sheree Gotuaco.

Lorenzana emphasized that innovation plays a vital role in preserving and sharing the nation’s heritage. She noted that Rizal himself embraced progressive ideas and new approaches, especially to education. Thus, this integration of modern technology into history acts as a fitting tribute to his legacy.
Gotuaco, meanwhile, conducted a live demonstration of the AR platform.
To add historical context to the program, public historian Dr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” Chua reflected on his long-standing connection to Rizal Park and the importance of presenting history in ways that resonate with younger generations. He highlighted how digital tools can help transform historical learning into a more engaging and meaningful experience.
The AR tour consists of 10 interactive stations located throughout the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal. Aside from displaying and narrating educational content, the platform includes a recording feature that enables visitors to capture and share their experience through social media.
Through projects like this, the NPDC continues to explore innovative ways of connecting Filipinos with the country's cultural heritage while ensuring that national history remains relevant, accessible and engaging for future generations.
