Lush gives back

WORLD PIECE - Donna Cuna-Pita - The Philippine Star

We all know Lush for its cult products (Mask of Magnaminty, Intergalactic Bath Bomb, Dream Cream Hand and Body Lotion), but there’s one other product you should know about and start hoarding: their Charity Pot Body Lotion.

“April 2017 saw the 10th birthday of Lush’s Charity Pot project,” shares Lauren Savage, international business development manager of Lush. “One hundred percent of all proceeds from our sales go to charities and organizations around the world working for different causes that our company believes in. So with every purchase, you not only get a quality product, you also help these organizations.”

Now sold in 36 countries, Charity Pot sales have raised over £20 million from its global sales and, since 2007, Lush has made over 5,500 donations to small, grassroots organizations fighting for refugee rights around the world, those confronting hunting and animal exploitation, campaigns targeting fossil fuel extraction, climate change, and many more.

“We are actually looking for organizations here in the Philippines that we can support,” Lauren adds. “We accept suggestions from our customers or the organizations themselves can get in touch with us directly so we can review if we can work together.”

Lush is not afraid to support the causes that other companies shy away from, as they believe they are often the most effective groups at creating change. According to Mark Constantine Obe, Lush cofounder and managing director, “We prefer to fund smaller, independent organizations that often challenge mainstream opinions and fight for causes that are frequently overlooked by funders. We offer donations ranging from £100 to £10,000 and aim to give support to non-violent, direct action groups that work tirelessly to make the world a better place and create change. Lush will give our time, Lush will give our raw materials, and Lush will give our shop space to Charity Pot — if you will be kind enough to buy it!”

The Lush Charity Pot hand and body lotion is made with materials sourced from their Sustainable Lush Fund (SLush Fund) projects, including: Fair Trade organic Colombian cocoa butter, geranium oil from Mountain Organic Farming (MOOF) in Kenya, and Fair Trade shea butter from the Women’s Ojoba Collective in Ghana. “We are exploring the possibility of sourcing raw materials from the Philippines, too,” shares Lauren.
