Musical Coyiutos in Visayan concert tour

MANILA, Philippines - Pianist Cristine Coyiuto and flautist Caitlin Alisa Coyiuto will perform on June 24, 26 and 28 in three key cities in the Visayas, Bacolod, Cebu and Dumaguete as part of a concert tour presented by Prudential Guarantee and Assurance Inc. - Bacolod, The Arts Council of Cebu Foundation Inc., Les Amis de France, and Siliman University Cultural Affairs Committee.

The Coyiutos’ concert tour in the Visayas is their first major performance for this year, following last year’s very successful concert at the Meralco Theater with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, with Helen Quach conducting. Cristine was hailed for elegance, sensitivity and refinement, and Caitlin for her technical as well as musical virtuosity.

Watching them exchange musical repartee and make beautiful music together is a most rewarding experience, according to supportive husband and father James Coyiuto.

The apple does not fall far from the tree, as the saying goes. Certainly, Caitlin has the making of a fine musician with a brilliant future. The Coyiuto family is a paragon for filial harmony brought about by an ennobling, deep love for music.  

In celebration of the bicentennial of Franz Joseph Haydn’s (1732-1809) death anniversary and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s (1809-1847) birth anniversary, Cristine’s programme will include Haydn’s whimsical Capriccio in G Major (Acht Sauschneider müssen sein), and 10 lyrical pieces from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words.

On the second half of the program, 14-year old Caitlin will join her mother in Cecile Chaminade’s Flute Concertino and Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio. Assisting artists are Joji Magadia (bass) and Horhe San Jose (drums), both members of the FILharmoniKA.

The Chaminade Concertino is considered one of the most beloved pieces in the flute repertoire. Not only is it technically demanding for the flutist, it has a charming romantic theme. Flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and pianist-composer Claude Bolling made the recording of this Bolling Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio in the ’70s and it has been considered one of the greatest musical movement of the 20th century — a fusion of jazz and classical music, and was at the top of the Billboard chart for 10 years.

Cristine has been active on the concert stage giving performances, and earns the plauidit “Poetess of the Piano.” She trained at the Juilliard School of Music and is one of the country’s leading classical pianists.

Caitlin is a ninth grader, and a consistent honor student at the International School Manila. She studies flute with Marie Poblete and Antonio Maigue. She was the youngest student in the master classes given by Vincent Lucas (principal flute of the Orchestre de Paris) and Davide Formisano (principal flute of the Teatro Alla Scala) last year at the Nice Conservatoire, France. She studies cello with Tess Ibero and piano with Virginia Laico Villanueva. Early this year, she attended the master class of Marthieu Dufour (principal flute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) in Hong Kong. She is also a pupil of Japanese French flutist, Yuko Dalancon.
