Style proposition

While the more dominant temperament for Fall fashion prefers all things austere, androgynous and somber, some designers have gone against the flow to present a more feminine and decadent style proposition.

At a glance, the look for Fall is one generally characterized by minimalism and androgyny. And while a good many of us are more than happy to engage in all things “normcore,” it’s always refreshing to adapt to a more unconventional approach to Fall dressing — one that is anchored on delicate, ethereal and intricate elements. Lace, it appears, is a strong underlying trend for Fall that, though not necessarily the most talked-about fashion proposition, captivates the most discriminating of front-row regulars.

It wouldn’t be right to talk about heirloom gowns without the mention of the late great Oscar de la Renta. The master’s collection for Fall 2014 is, in true fashion, one with a wide array of looks that include exquisite, straightforward pieces that are peppered with guipure lace, jacquard and other texture-rich fabrics. The result is a look that has  the audience wanting for more.

Meanwhile, Alberta Ferretti creates a world of forest fairies with pieces that are impeccably done  with the brand’s signature Italian craftsmanship. Texture — through feathers, tweed, alpaca, ribbon and lace — is the key element in creating a look reminiscent of a high fashion version of the Black Swan. The whole collection was ethereal to say the least, with just the right amount of earthliness.

Marchesa’s red carpet appeal for Fall, under the direction of design duo Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, turns Scottish highlands to glamour. Sent down the runways during the show were heritage plaids but this time, utilizing reworked lace to achieve a variety of patterns. There were corset-like pieces that also paved the way for laced up details. The brilliance of both Chapman and Craig, however, was emphasized through their masterful drapery, playing with opulent fabrics like chiffon and Chantilly lace.

That hip brand Gareth Pugh’s optimistic take on Fall fashion this year is a breath of fresh air. Working on immaculate whites, Pugh brings back a sense of glamour by using silhouettes inspired by Dior’s New Look. He adds doses upon doses of texture and sheeting, which further reinforces a less gloomy, apocalyptic feel to the season.
