DPWH, LGUs prepare for ‘Big One’

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is coordinating with local government units (LGUs) to ensure strict compliance with seismic resiliency regulations as the country braces for the potential “Big One,” a major earthquake event.
Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan, in an interview with dzBB yesterday, said the DPWH is responsible for ensuring infrastructure resilience in public infrastructure and government buildings.
LGUs, on the other hand, are expected to enforce compliance with seismic resilience parameters, particularly for high-rise buildings constructed within their jurisdictions, he added.
Bonoan expressed confidence that private buildings in the country are constructed with “quite conservative design requirements” that account for seismic events up to magnitude 7.8.
On the DPWH’s role, he noted that the agency is currently implementing retrofitting works on public roads and infrastructure under the Philippine Seismic Risk Reduction and Resilience Project, which is funded by the World Bank.
