'Dream Match', tumabo sa takilya
Sa kabila ng nararanasang global economic meltdown, nagkaroon pa rin ng respetadong kita ang nakaraang non-title welterweight fight nina Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao at world six-division champion Oscar Dela Hoya.
Sa ulat ni HBO PPV (Pay-Per-View) chief Mark Taffet, humakot ang nasabing “Dream Match” nina Pacquiao at Dela Hoya ng kabuuang 1.25 milyong subscriptions at nakapagpasok ng $70 milyon mula sa domestic television revenue.
Ito ang ikatlong biggest-selling non-heavy-weight fight sa kasaysayan na tumabla rin sa pagiging ninth overall sa all-time list.
“When it’s all counted up, it will end up at 1.35 or 1.4 million (subscriptions),” sabi ni Bob Arum ng Top Rank Promotions ukol sa nailistang 680,000 buys ng Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight mula sa cable systems at 570,000 naman galing sa satellite providers.
Ang tanging mga non-heavyweight bouts na nabigong lagpasan ng “Dream Match” ay ang laban ni Dela Hoya kay Floyd Mayweather Jr., noong Mayo ng 2007 kung saan humakot ito ng all-time pay-per-view record na 2.4 million buys at $134 million sa revenue at ang pagtatagpo ni “Golden Boy” at ni Felix “Tito” Trinidad noong 1999 na nakahugot ng 1.4 million buys at kitang $71.4 milyon.
Pinalawig lamang ng nasabing mga numero ang all-time pay-per-view record ng 35-anyos na si Dela Hoya, inaasahang magbubulsa ng halos $25 milyon sa kanilang laban ni Pacquiao na kikita naman ng $11.2 milyon (P548.8 milyon), sa 14.1 milyon sa PPV buys at kitang $696.4 milyon sa kanyang 19 na HBO PPV events.
“It was our hope the fight would do a million buys and take its place among the mega fights in the annals of boxing history,” ani Taffet. “In this economy, our expectations were appropriately tempered. But 1.25 million buys shows tremendous support from boxing fans all across the country and reinforces the importance of continuing to present the biggest and best fights. (Russell Cadayona)
