SEA Games gold medalist pararangalan sa PSA Awards Night

Pangungunahan ng walong tracksters at apat na wushu experts at bowling champions na nagbigay ng karangalan sa bansa at maraming bilang ng medalyang ginto sa nakaraang Southeast Asian Games sa Kuala Lumpur noong nakaraang Setyembre ang listahan ng mga gold medalists na tatanggap ng citations mula sa Philippine Sportswriters Association sa kani-lang Annual Awards Night sa Enero 11 sa Holiday Inn Manila.

Tatanggap si Eduardo Buenavista, nanguna sa kampanya ng athletics sa pagsungkit ng walong ginto sa Kuala Lumpur matapos na manalo sa 3,000m steeplechase at 5,000m run ng PSA’s Major Award, habang ang anim niyang teammates ay pagkakalooban ng citations mula sa pinakamatanda ng news organization ng bansa mula ng itinatag ito noong 1949.

Ang naturang Annual PSA Awards Night ay hatid ng Photokina Marketing at Red Bull at suportado ng Philippine Sports Commission.

Ang iba pang tracksters na nagdala ng karangalan sa bansa ay sina Ernie Candelario (400m), Fidel Gallenero (decathlon), John Lozada (800m), Elma Muros (heptathlon) at marathoners Cristabel Martes at Roy Vence.

Nagpamalas naman ang wushu ng impresibong performance sa biennial meet nang humakot ng apat na ginto sina Mark Rosales (cudgel play), Willy Wang (spear play), Jerome Calica (sanshou 52 kg) at Marques Sanguiao (sanshou 60 kg).

Nagbulsa rin ang bowling team ng apat na golds mula kina Leonardo Rey (men’s all events), RP ladies doubles team nina Liza del Rosario at Arianne Cerdeña, men’s trio nina Rey, Chester King at CJ Suarez at men’s team-of-five nina King, Christian Suarez, Engelbert Rivera, Benito Dytoc at Rey.

Tatanggap si del Rosario ng PSA’s Major Award bilang finalist ng World Cup ng bowling sa Patthaya, Thailand noong November.

Bibigyan rin ng citations ang RP men’s basketball team na kinatawan ng Metropolitan Basketball Association mula sa sportswritings fraternity sa pormal rites kung saan panauhing pandangal at tagapagsalita ang Pangu-long Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Kikilalanin din ang nagawa ng billiards team na nanalo ng tatlong golds mula kina cue artists Lee Van Corteza (8-ball), Antonio Lining (9-ball) at Warren Kiamco (15-ball rotation).

Bagamat hindi nanalo ng ginto si world champion Efren ‘Bata" Reyes sa Kuala Lumpur, naging maganda naman ang kanyang buong taon nang manalo ng apat na major titles at nag-uwi ng P12.4 milyon premyo upang tanghaling PSA’s Top Male Athlete of the Year.

Ang iba pang awardees ay sina Jose Ma. Pabillore at Gretchen Malalad sa karatedo, Veronica Domingo at Ma. Nelia Sy-Ycasa ng taekwondo at Purita Joy Marino (archery, Wally Mendoza (fencing), Juvic Pagunsan (golf), John Baylon (judo) at Jasmin Luis (shooting).
