Homeless

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Philippine Star

An all-Pinoy-manned Bahamas-flagged cargo ship sank off Vietnam recently. Two bodies have been recovered so far while 16 others were reported missing. Search and rescue operations are underway as I write this (Sunday, Jan. 4/2015.)

These ill-starred Pinoy seamen deserve to be hailed as Phl heroes being part of the thousands of OFWs from whom the country receives millions of dollar remittances that have bouyed up the country's economy.

***

If you think it's a shame for us to have homeless Pinoys living on the sidewalks, under trees and on skywalks or overpasses, vanish the thought. We are not alone.

Even in big and modern cities in Europe there are also homeless people who sleep on the highways, airport terminals, waterfront waiting stations, etc. A recent Agence France Presse report said in our Mother Spain there are close to 40,000 people without homes and have to sleep on the streetsides, airport terminals where they  avail themselves of free bath, etc.

I enjoyed watching on tv the 2014 UST Christmas Concert. It deserved two thumbs up from Thomasians. One thumb for being a topnotch show, the other thumb for being an all-Thomasian talents presentation. The singers, the speakers, the members of the symphony orchestra, were all Thomasians. No so-called talents from the showbiz community.

According to this news story here, the CBCP has warned priests: "Don't fall in love with money." The warning is well taken although it's no longer necessary. What priest still doesn't know that the love of money is the root of all evil?

***

But a friend of mine says the CBCP warning is still necessary not only for the priests but also for the non-priests. For as Donald Ip, a Hong Kong writer, said: "Money is so lovable...even if it's only language is good-bye."

OVERHEARD...News has reached this corner that many Taclobanons living in other places of the country instead of going to Manila to see Pope Francis are coming home to Tacloban instead. "Mas makakita pa ta'g klaro sa Santo Papa kay dili man milyones ka tawo ang modugok sa Tacloban," said Marietta Ponce, a Mandauehanon married to Jack Ponce, a native of Tacloban.
