Now United: We want to be as famous as Spice Girls
MANILA, Philippines — Last year, famed film and TV producer/ artist manager Simon Fuller created a group he calls the “dream team” as it will present various multi-talented performing artists from different countries; showcasing the best talents from around the world.
Simon Fuller, the man behind global superstar and pop icon girl group Spice Girls, had many hit projects in the past including reality TV shows “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance.”
But one could only think one reason why he formed Now United—perhaps to promote unity among many nations through music? Fuller has not shared any thoughts since the group’s debut, but during a press conference held last July 17 at Marco Polo Ortigas for Now United’s three-day concert in Manila, the group had something to say: “Now United is all about love.”
Consisting of 14 singing and dancing artists hailing from 14 different countries—whose members already had a career in their respective nations, including Philippines’ very own Bailey May—Now United has already released its first single, “Summer in the City,” with a music video.
Based on the group’s official Instagram page and website, each member seems to have gone through many serious challenges to get to where they are now: several auditions with panel judges and even going through a boot camp where every single aspiring artist had the opportunity for a fair fight, and even until the day the 14 members were chosen, the training never stopped.
The group is now working with some serious powerhouse names in the industry, including “Just Dance” producer RedOne. They will also be dancing their way to the top alongside Kyle Hanagami and WildaBeast, a Hollywood A-list choreographer. With all these, it is no surprise if the group will soon take over the world of pop music.
In an interview with Philstar.com, the group explained how their musical aesthetic differ from other artists or groups: “Our core is pop music, but we try to include other types of genres and perhaps in the future, it would be wonderful to infuse our music with each of our country’s music style such as K-pop’s upbeat sound, Choro from Brazil, and Psychedelic rock from the UK, and more.”
The members also expressed that they aspire to be as famous as Spice Girls, now that Fuller has their back. “We definitely want to be as famous and iconic as Spice Girls, but we also want the world to know us as Now United. We want to follow their footsteps but at the same time, we want to showcase our originality,” said Joalin from Finland.
At the press con, former Kapamilya star Bailey was not spared from being asked about former love team partner Ylona Garcia, who also competed at the boot camp for Now United.
When asked if Bailey and Ylona are still communicating, this is what he had to say: “We’re still friends and we will always be friends. She will always have a special place in my heart but we are at a phase in our life and professional career where we have to choose a path. Mine happens to be with Now United; this is where I’m focused at the moment.”
Now United will perform on July 20 at Lucky Chinatown Mall, July 21 at Eastwood Central Plaza, and July 22 at Venice Piazza.
