We tend to associate new years with new beginnings, fresh starts, and second chances. Of course, new years don’t really bring new beginnings, fresh starts, and second chances. Dec. 31, 2013 and Jan. 1, 2014 are just dates — the stars haven’t realigned, the universe hasn’t shifted, and we’re members of the same human race we’ve always been part of.

Many churches observe March 25 as Annunciation Day. It commemorates the angel’s announcement to Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus, the Messiah. In our success-oriented society, this festival is a needed reminder to recognize and rejoice at the beginning of God’s work in a person’s life rather than holding our applause for the accomplishments.

Butchie believed, like most mothers who thought the world of her sons, that such a terrible thing could happen to other families, not her own. In her words, her family was "traditional, we did not go socializing, we went on vacations together." She and her husband attended virtually every PTA meeting in their sons’ school.
