SC orders mining exec’s release from BI detention

MANILA, Philippines — Mining executive Joseph Cue Sy should be released from detention by the Bureau of Immigration (BI), the Supreme Court has ruled.
Sy must post a cash bond of P900,000 for his release, the high tribunal’s First Division said.
Immigration agents arrested Sy in August 2025 for allegedly being a Chinese national carrying falsified Philippine documents, with the name Chen Zhong Zhen.
Sy, the 61-year-old chairman of Global Ferronickel Holdings Inc., had been ordered back in BI detention after staying in a hospital for a month in July.
In February, the Court of Appeals ruled that the BI unlawfully arrested and detained Sy.
The appellate court cited Sy’s valid Philippine birth certificate, which was issued through late registration in 2007.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the BI would abide by the high court’s ruling. – Evelyn Macairan
