Quezon LGUs declare state of calamity over El Niño

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Philippines — Four local government units (LGUs) in this province have declared a state of calamity due to the effects of a super El Niño.
Data from the Office of Civil Defense showed the towns of Alabat, Jomalig, General Nakar and Guinayangan have placed their areas under a state of calamity.
The declaration allows LGUs to access its quick response fund to address the effects of El Niño including providing assistance to affected residents.
Sectors considered most vulnerable to the calamity are agriculture and fisheries, which are expected to suffer from prolonged dry weather, below-normal rainfall and limited water supply.
Even before the drought conditions intensified, Quezon Gov. Angelina Tan has initiated measures to strengthen preparedness against the effects of El Niño.
