Vintage bombs found at Sulu junk shop

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Dozens of old bombs and explosives were found by personnel of the the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) at a junk shop in Jolo, Sulu on Monday.
The PCG said a civilian informed the agency about the presence of bombs and explosives at the junk shop located in Barangay Alat.
Among those recovered were several mortar rounds, cannon projectiles and a 500-pounder vintage bomb, according to Cmdre. Al-Hafidz Bih, chief of the PCG-Western Sulu station.
Bih said the bombs have accumulated rust.
Members of the PCG’s K9 and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams inspected the bombs, which they said could still trigger massive explosions once exposed or triggered accidentally.
“The recovery of the bombs was completed without any untoward incident,” Bih said.
The bombs were placed under the custody of the PCG-EOC for further assessment.
