After sex education comes voters' education

- Ana Liza M. Villanueva -

MANILA, Philippines - After sex education, voters’ education should now be included in the public school curriculum to give students ample knowledge on the selection of qualified officials to lead the country.

Voters’ education, as planned by the Commission on Elections (Comelec), will introduce the concept of responsible voting, starting perhaps on the reinvigoration of the concept of the election of class officers.

The voters’ education subject may begin simply by describing to students the responsibilities of each class officer, in the process making them understand how to choose wisely among candidates for local and national positions when they reach the legal age to vote.

If planned out wisely and implemented efficiently, the voters’ education might just be the perfect vehicle to have a new breed of voters who can say no to blind voting and yes to principled voting.
