The impeachment complaint against BBM

STRAIGHT TO THE POINT - Atty. Ruphil Bañoc - The Freeman

Whether it succeeds or not, this impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand Marcos will work in favor of Vice President Sara Duterte – at least politically and strategically.

First, one can recall that when an impeachment complaint was filed against VP Sara last year, the loudest voices, which did not mean the most reasonable ones, from the House of Representatives were in unison in saying that all they wanted was to give Sara the chance to air her side; yes, to defend herself.

When their constituents in their respective districts asked them in anger why they signed the complaint, they had the gall and the nerve to say that all they wanted was the rule of law. They swore on their ancestors’ grave that they read the complaint, understood it by heart, and received not a single centavo in exchange for their signature.

The complaint was so air-tight (I’m being sarcastic in that description) that Supreme Court trashed it in a manner that made these hopefully honorable representatives bow their collective heads in shame – if, at all, they’re still capable of feeling ashamed.

The question is: Can they now say the same thing about the complaint against Bongbong? I have serious doubts.

Will they rush to sign the impeachment complaint to give BBM the chance to air his side in a fair trial, or will they rush to kill it for fear of retribution from the god in Malacanang?

Observe the height of hypocrisy of some of our representatives! Watch how low the House has sunk!  Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, on the impeachment complaint filed against BBM: “This particular complaint appears crafted more for media consumption than for serious constitutional scrutiny. The House will not treat impeachment as a mere press statement or partisan maneuver. We will demand substance, and in this instance, substance is conspicuously absent.”

Media consumption? That was exactly how the complaint against VP Sara was crafted, all for media hype. That’s why the Supreme Court chopped it into thousand pieces and threw it back to the crocs in the House.

Partisan maneuver? What a crap! The party in power moved heaven and earth to have everybody toe the line.

Let me go back to my assertion that this impeachment complaint will work in favor of the VP Sara politically and strategically. Why? Because the public will have the chance to observe how the House will treat the President Bongbong and VP Sara. The public will witness the total subservience and canine loyalty of the House towards Malacañang when it comes to BBM.

The House will not hesitate to bow down to the whim and caprice of Malacañang even if 2028 is fast approaching; after all, our representatives still think that as long as they continue to have substandard flood control projects, mini-gyms and waiting sheds, the voters will continue to vote for them. The Senate has different dynamics, where a senator’s opinion on national issue may doom his chances for reelection.

I am excited about how political developments will unfold as the nation faces two impeachment complaints – one against the president, and the other, against the vice president.
