After 56 years, where to now?

ROSES AND THORNS - Pia Roces Morato - The Philippine Star

(Conclusion)

In the area of national security, it is important to understand that this is not only about soldiers on the battlefield but rather, the brave men and women in our communities who dutifully do their part to secure food, water and other essential services necessary for all of us not just to survive but to thrive. Human interest stories help us discover the quiet heroic spirit of humanity, in this case, our countrymen doing their duty to protect and safeguard our nation.

I sometimes wonder how much of this our fellow citizens know, how much of a sacrifice our frontliners make for our sake. Our busy lives often leave us taking these things for granted, especially when we have access to our needs such as food on the table, not to mention the convenience of food delivery services. Sometimes, however, we need something evocative to bring to life our Filipino spirit, and education should include a genuine love for country, with every member of society ready to do his part in uplifting our national identity and interests. Not to mention how life is harder on the other side of the fence and so few are aware.

But the question is, how does one accomplish this if one doesn’t fully know what he needs to do to ensure that such interests are protected and that the ideals of peace and development are upheld by all? Film, as I always say, is a great way to educate the people, especially a good film. As a director, Baby Ruth’s desire focused on the voices of the fishermen who have, more often than not, been overlooked or silenced. “Food Delivery” goes beyond the struggle – it honors the Filipino fishermen for their dignity and courage which transcend borders and political divides, simply because this is found in the heart of humanity.

Each individual’s life holds inherent value and being in the service of humanity is the most powerful force that should bring us together for the betterment of mankind. It is my genuine hope that this documentary reaches the heart of every Filipino citizen, and more so the rest of the world. Our stories, after all, need to be told.
