RCE-Cebu and VHC training updates

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Piquero Ballescas - The Freeman

For October to November, 2023, a total of 2324 participants joined our 11 trainings on Kitchen Waste Composting and Options for Other Waste Types.

The online sessions (6) had DepEd participants (total of 2028) from Bais, Bayawan, Bogo, Bohol, Canlaon, Carcar, Cebu City, Naga, Danao, Dumaguete, Guihulngan, Dumaguete, Lapulapu, Mandaue, Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Tagbilaran, Talisay, Tanjay and Toledo.

Our sincere thanks again to DepEd Regional Director Salustiano Jimenez, Chief Education Supervisor Tomas Pastor, and especially to Sir Ranilo Edar and their technical staff for their wonderful support for this training.

Our participants for the face-to-face sessions (5) came from Zonta Cebu (40), the Rivergate tenants (35) and the SNPP (Samahan ng Nagkakaisang Pamilya ng Pantawid (221).

We are grateful to Zonta Club of Cebu Marilou Cañizares, Atty. Beth Reyes of Rivergate and Atty. Hector Soliman for linking us to Roy of ANSA-SNPP (Affiliated Network for Social Accountabiliy-SNPP).

Most especially, we would like to offer our sincere thanks to Sir Novie Diacamos of SNPP who introduced us to SNPP’s Emelda Sarmiento Patigdas of Sta. Rosa, Olango, Josephine Pamat Jumao-as of San Vicente, Olango, and Niscil Dacayana of Sudlon 2!

Heartfelt thanks as well to San Vicente, Olango Barangay Captain Edilberta Eyas Lambojon who joined the session and shared an inspiring message to the participants.

We would also like to thank the outgoing Sudlon 2 Barangay Captain for his wonderful support and delicious snacks shared with the very lively group of participants last Sunday!

RCE-Cebu and former Cebu Councilor Alvin Dizon who kindly facilitated this training partnership with VHC of the Netherlands look forward to the participants’ practice of kitchen waste composting, of having AGAPE- a garden per ecosystem, a garden in every participant’s home and community!

Imagine 2324 participants, responsibly managing and transforming their kitchen wastes into composting?

Imagine further 2324 families raising their own vegetables, herbs, trees within their own homes?

Imagine how much kitchen/food waste will not have to end in landfills/dumpsites because these 2324 participants are converting these to compost?

Not only will these 2324 participants ensure steady, healthy food supply for themselves, they will also be contributing to methane reduction, join others keep the world from further global warming!

And as many of the participants come from Pantawid families, practicing composting from kitchen/food wastes will assure them of food, livelihood/income generation and hopefully, they and their households can lift themselves from poverty and hunger from here on!

If the 2324 participants will do waste segregation/manage their paper wastes, make paper uling/charcoal balls instead of buying these, they will also reduce paper wastes being thrown into dumpsites/landfills.

Making their own paper uling from paper wastes will also protect more trees from being cut!

More protected trees mean more oxygen supply for people, better carbon dioxide absorption, less floods and erosion, among other benefits from trees!

Producing their own paper uling can provide them savings- they do not have to buy uling. Or they can sell their paper uling and earn!

Finally, a third objective of the RCE-Cebu and VHC training is for participants to make their own individual eco-brick to collect all plastic wastes in their homes and elsewhere.

Can you imagine if 2324 participants have even just one ecobrick which can contain more than 100 single-use plastics (SUPs)?

That will remove from our rivers and water bodies at least 232, 400 SUPs right away!

If the 2324 participants, in turn, will all be Maritess, sharing the news about even just ecobricks to the rest of their families/neighbors and friends, imagine how much plastic wastes can easily and simply be removed from our rivers, seas and oceans?

Imagine further the combined impact of reduced plastic, paper and kitchen wastes for the protection of people and our planet?

Hope to see you all in our future free trainings!
