Saying goodbye to the year that was

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Perez - The Freeman

2019 isn’t really everyone’s perfect year. Well, there isn’t really a perfect year. There were ups and downs that made up the 365 days. Some were notable more than unforgettable, which made us stronger and gave us lessons to learn.

The death of Christine Lee Silawan, the young teenager who served in church never to be seen again was a story that everyone couldn’t forget. She was skinned to the bone with her eyeballs bulging out; totally inhumane. The authorities had a mix up of the suspects until one was finally filed with a case. Until today, justice has not been served.

Who could also forget the controversial Good Conduct Time Allowance? This law that paved the way to the reopening of already-healed wounds stirred so much discussion even up to the Senate. Those convicted in the Chiong rape-slay case were among those who availed of this benefit which scared those who were traumatized by the crime. Although convicted, there were those who gave their opinion that they also deserved a second chance.

Another notable event that happened this year was the death of Clarin, Misamis Oriental, Mayor David Navarro. What was more chilling was when I was still able to see the person still alive, an hour before he was gunned down. It formed many questions in my head, including why he was killed while under police custody. Until now, the perpetrators are still on the loose. These are the same crimes that threaten the safety of our place and make us doubt our own integrity. Even our police force can’t keep us safe.

There are many more incidents that took place that have definitely made room in our memory banks. Others are worth remembering, others aren’t.

The year that was is definitely a memorable one but is not something that I would want to happen again. I’m looking forward to a year that excites me and makes me grow into a person. I want peace and harmony within my heart and in society around us.

Sure it is full of uncertainty but we can always hope for the best.

So as we wait for midnight, let us all say our thanks to 2019 and welcome in a new decade. Let us thank everyone who has made this year a great one and look forward to 2020. Let not any superstitious belief dictate how we live our life. It will all be our choices. And if ever we meet unfavorable events, the challenge now is how to respond positively. Are we all ready? Now we all say, happy new decade! Hello 2020, we are more than excited to start with you a new year.
