Senate probes bullying in schools

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate committee on basic education resumed yesterday its investigation on bullying and campus violence.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian lamented the worsening cases of school bullying, which result in violence, the latest of which was the killing of a Grade 8 student in Parañaque by her male classmate.
“The Philippines recorded the highest incidents of bullying, making it the bullying capital of the world,” Gatchalian said, citing findings of the Program for International Student Assessment.
He said bullying remains pervasive in schools and has resulted in the death of a learner.
Leonisa Romano, principal of Moonwalk National High School, said the child in conflict with the law was a “loner,” who was forced to stab the victim after the latter allegedly bullied him.
The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition welcomed the Senate’s inquiry, saying that determining and understanding the root causes of bullying in school is crucial.
Department of Education data presented during the probe showed that there were 658 bullying cases committed by students and reported in the helpline from November 2022 to April 2025.
