Evacuees vacate Kanlaon schools

Gilbert Bayoran - The Philippine Star

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Evacuees in La Castellana and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental have decamped schools used as evacuation centers for six months, in time for today’s opening of classes, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

The NDRRMC earlier told the evacuees to decamp from the 11 schools they occupied since Kanlaon Volcano erupted last year.

The evacuees were transferred to new relocation sites that include barangay covered courts and open spaces that are outside the six-kilometer permanent danger zones.

Modular tents were provided by the Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

John de Asis, municipal disaster risk reduction and management office head in La Castellana, said the evacuees whose houses are near main roads and can easily be evacuated were allowed to go home.
