'Wonka' gets earlier Philippine release date, shows new trailer
MANILA, Philippines — The Warner Bros. movie "Wonka" starring Timothee Chalamet as the famous chocolatier in Roald Dahl's books is getting an earlier release date in the Philippines.
"Wonka" will now come out in Philippines cinemas on December 6, a week ahead of the United States.
The movie was initially going to come out in January 2024, likely after the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival had finished, meaning, this new date will serve as an early Christmas treat for Filipinos as one of the first people in the world to see the film.
Accompanying the announcement of the new release date was the second official trailer for "Wonka," which sees Chalamet's titular character getting into more antics with Lofty the Oompa-Loompa played by Hugh Grant.
"Wonka" follows the character's transition as a chocolate seller to an eccentric genius, with the dreams of selling the best chocolate in the world to everyone despite the dominant hold of an elitist chocolate cartel.
The film directed by Paul King also stars Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, and Sally Hawkins.
The character first appeared in Dahl's 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and its 1972 sequel "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator," and on the big screen was portrayed first by Gene Wilder in 1971 then Johnny Depp in 2005.
