Wage theft at MMDA busted

MANILA, Philippines — Some employees of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)’s payroll division have been arrested following allegations of wage theft.
“The suspects unlawfully took small amounts from the salaries of targeted employees and diverted those amounts to their own accounts,” the MMDA said yesterday. “They found a way to manipulate the computerized payroll system.”
The agency discovered the scheme last week.
Acting on the complaint filed by MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, MMDA general manager and retired police Col. Procopio Lipana led the arrest of an undisclosed number of employees and sent them to inquest proceedings.
The MMDA said it would prepare a “strong case build-up” and file “non-bailable charges against the perpetrators.”
“An internal audit and investigation is ongoing and safety measures are implemented to prevent similar incidents like this from happening again,” the MMDA said.
