NEW YORK, United States — Lena Dunham's award-winning television show "Girls" will return to screens for a limited run, HBO said on Tuesday.

The five-episode run is set to begin production next year, a decade after the finale of the original series aired.

Dunham, who created, wrote, and starred in the show, will return as Hannah, along with Allison Williams (Marnie), Jemima Kirke (Jessa), Zosia Mamet (Shoshanna), and Andrew Rannells (Elijah).

"I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day," Dunham said in a statement.

"Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower," she said. "And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it's pretty hard to get them to stop."

HBO announced the show's return in a social media post showing Dunham on a mock video call with members of the original cast. In the video, Dunham asks the cast if they are in, before raising the question: "Can we still call it "Girls"?"

American actor Adam Driver, who played Dunham's on-off love interest, was not mentioned in the announcement. In her memoir "Famesick," Dunham accused Driver of aggressive behavior on the set of "Girls." Driver has not commented publicly on the allegations.

"Girls" followed the lives of 20-something women in New York, and critics say it defined the social mores of that generation. The show received 19 Emmy nominations and two wins during its six seasons.
