Kakie opens up about love life: ‘I’m very grateful that I never settled’

MANILA, Philippines — Before finding love, Kakie Pangilinan candidly shared that she sometimes wondered whether being outspoken and growing up in the public eye made her difficult to love.
But rather than lower her expectations or settle for a relationship to avoid being alone, the singer-actress chose to wait.
Kakie is dating Dan Laurel, who, according to reports, is the 29-year-old great-grandson of former Philippine president Jose P. Laurel.
Giving a glimpse into her relationship, the 25-year-old daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan recently shared a sweet social media post to celebrate their anniversary, writing: “Sweetheart, though I’m certain I’ve loved you a long, long time, I like this particular atom-arrangement quite a bit. A very alleged anniversary to Mr. Precedent who accidentally told me and then unaccidentally drove me to the port of Batangas at the crack of dawn two days later and, as it happens, was always the only one for me.
“I don’t know what is wrong with you but I adore it nearly as much as I adore your sister. Thank you for peeling my shrimp.”
In an upcoming episode of The Philippine STAR’s “Real Talk,” Kakie opened up more about her love life, including what her current relationship has taught her about love and self-worth.
She acknowledged that there were certain expectations that came with having a high-profile family, especially in terms of her personal relationships.
“I guess sometimes, you know, you do wonder at the end of the day, it’s like, was I scaring anyone off? Or like, was I sort of hard and difficult to love? And I think we all have that fear in some capacity,” she said.
Despite those doubts, Kakie said she kept a mental checklist of qualities that she hoped to find in a romantic partner.
“For a long time, I had a sort of checklist. Like they say, get specific, manifest this, manifest that. That went on for like what six, seven years,” she recalled.
But about two weeks before meeting Dan at a family wedding, she said she experienced what she called an epiphany about her approach to relationships.
“It was this weird, really circular way of realizing, wait, I love myself. And it was a very like, whoa,” she said.
“(Then) when he came around, it was like, oh my gosh, suddenly Papa Jesus said, your entire checklist is checked off...”
“I’m very, very grateful that I never settled,” she said.
Kakie also reflected on how she had spent much of her younger years thinking about becoming someone capable of loving another person, without necessarily considering whether she was equally prepared to receive that love.
“I think I spent a really long time sort of trying to become a person who like would love well but not necessarily receive it very well. And I think that we kind of focus on that a lot of like if this person who I like just liked me back, I could love them really well, but in actuality, you also have to think about it in the reverse. And I learned that receiving love is also a skill.”
“He (Dan) taught me that,” she added.
In the same interview, Kakie shared the unlikely circumstances and connections that nearly brought her and Dan together several times before they finally met.
She also revealed how her mother, Sharon, had been praying and how they once had a heart-to-heart conversation about her romantic future.
Catch the full interview on “Real Talk,” which will be released on The Philippine STAR’s YouTube channel this week.
